What to Expect During a Root Canal Procedure
June 11, 2024 / DENTISTRY
It's normal to feel a mix of anxiety and uncertainty if a root canal is recommended as part of your dental treatment. The good news is that modern root canal procedures are far less daunting than their reputation suggests. Understanding what to expect can help ease your concerns and prepare you for a smooth experience.
Why Do You Need a Root Canal?
A root canal is necessary when the pulp inside your tooth becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip. If left untreated, this infection can cause severe pain and lead to abscesses. A root canal saves your tooth by removing the damaged pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inner chambers, and sealing the space to prevent further infection.
Step-by-Step Breakdown of the Procedure
1. Initial Consultation and X-rays
During your first visit, our dental team will take X-rays to assess the extent of the infection. This helps in planning the procedure and ensuring all infected areas are treated.
2. Administering Anesthesia
Before the procedure begins, local anesthesia is applied to numb the tooth and surrounding area. This ensures you remain comfortable and pain-free throughout the process.
3. Accessing the Pulp Chamber
Once you're numb, we will place a rubber dam around the tooth to keep it dry and free from saliva. Then, a small opening is made on the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber.
4. Removing Infected Pulp
Using specialized instruments, our dentist will carefully remove the infected or inflamed pulp from the chamber and root canals. This step eliminates the source of infection and pain.
5. Cleaning and Disinfecting
After the pulp is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected to remove any remaining bacteria. This step is crucial for preventing future infections.
6. Filling and Sealing
The cleaned canals are then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. This material seals the canals to prevent bacteria from re-entering. Finally, a temporary filling is placed on the tooth to protect it until a permanent restoration can be made.
7. Restoring the Tooth
In most cases, a crown is placed over the tooth to restore its strength, function, and appearance. This usually requires a follow-up visit after the temporary filling has settled.
After the Procedure: What to Expect
It's normal to experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity for a few days following a root canal. Over-the-counter pain relievers are typically effective in managing this. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until final restoration has been placed. Maintaining good oral hygiene and attending follow-up appointments will ensure your tooth heals properly and remains healthy.
