Five Important Questions You Should Be Asking Your Dentist
February 10, 2023 / DENTISTRY
Your dental office is staffed with specially-trained and educated professionals who are full of knowledge about your oral health and how it relates to your overall wellbeing. Between Dr. Dan Foresto and the team of dental assistants and hygienists at Foresto Dentistry, when you call or visit our office there is always somebody available to answer any questions you may have about your oral health.
But while we’re here to help, we can’t answer a question if we don’t know you have one – so don’t be shy. If you’re uncertain about anything related to oral hygiene or oral health, ask us!
To get you started, here are the five questions we hear from our patients most often:
- How often should I have a checkup and cleaning?
While every person is different and has a varied dental history, most people are recommended to visit the dentist every 6-9 months. Check with your extended benefits provider to see how often your visits are covered. - How do I prevent cavities and tooth decay?
This one is easy – brush and floss every day, and visit your dentist regularly. Brushing and flossing will help to remove much of the plaque and food debris from your teeth before they have the chance to erode the enamel and cause decay. However, it’s extremely difficult to remove all of the plaque and bacteria from your mouth, making regular dental visits and professional cleanings extremely important. - How can I best maintain good oral hygiene at home?
The best way to keep your teeth clean and healthy in between visits is to avoid sugary drinks and foods, drink plenty of water, brush twice a day using a brush with soft bristles and a toothpaste with fluoride, and floss every day. - How can I make my teeth look whiter?
If you’re unhappy with the shade of your teeth, there are many whitening options available. Our team can discuss the professional options that will help you achieve a whiter, brighter smile, and go over the difference between these and the over-the-counter options that can be purchased at any pharmacy. Veneers are also an option that is more permanent. - Do my children need to see the dentist?
This is another easy one – yes!! Bringing your children to see the dentist early on in their lives not only gives the dentist the opportunity to ensure that the teeth are developing properly, but it also shows your child that regular dental visits are just part of their overall healthcare routine and are nothing to fear. This will increase the likelihood your children will grow into adults who prioritize regular dental visits and their oral health in general.
